San Marcos
This place is great for kids! There's a big playground and tons of space to run around on the property. We love exploring while mom and dad try the beers.
Tucked away on a 50-acre family ranch between San Marcos and Wimberley, Roughhouse Brewing is exactly the kind of place you hope to stumble upon in the Texas Hill Country. This mom-and-pop operation opened in 2018 and has quickly become one of our favorite spots to bring the whole family for a relaxed afternoon of great beer and even better vibes.
For families, Roughhouse checks all the boxes. There's a dedicated playground where kids can burn off energy while parents enjoy a cold farmhouse ale under the shade of oak trees. The sprawling property gives little ones plenty of room to roam and explore, and the laid-back atmosphere means no one's going to give you side-eye when your toddler gets a little loud. Dogs are welcome too, so bring the whole crew.
The food program here is legit—scratch-made dishes using ingredients sourced from Texas producers. It's not your typical brewery snack bar; think elevated comfort food that pairs perfectly with their oak-fermented beers. They regularly host live music on weekends, adding to the festive, community-centered feel.
What makes Roughhouse special is their unique approach to brewing. They ferment 100% of their beer in American oak foeders using wild yeast harvested right from the ranch, and they're even experimenting with cave-aged beers in an underground cave on the property—the only brewery doing this in Texas. It's craft beer meets Hill Country adventure.
Whether you're a beer geek excited about spontaneous fermentation or just a parent looking for a beautiful spot where everyone in the family can have a good time, Roughhouse delivers.
